NSS volunteers of Narengi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, GU organize webinar on drug menace

GUWAHATI: The NSS (National Service Scheme) Unit of Narengi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya and Gauhati University NSS Cell observed the 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' by jointly organizing a national webinar on Saturday.

Inaugurating the webinar Dr Ranjan Kr. Kakati, DSW and Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Gauhati University expressed his grave concern on the increasing trend of drug abuse amongst the youths and how it has destroyed the future of a large number of youths leading to uncertain future or untimely death. Dr Kakati urged everyone to remain vigilant against drug abuse and illicit trafficking by creating awareness and reporting such cases to the administration.

Attending the programme as Chief Guest Nabaneet Mahanta, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Police District, Guwahati said the drug abuse is slowly destroying the social fabric of the country and destroying the lives of the young generation.

Mahanta explained various steps taken by the Government of Assam to resolve the issue of drug abuse and cited the recent all-out war of Assam Police against drug peddlers and traffickers as a step in the right direction. Rajiv Deka, Counseling Psychologist and Director, Decaz Career Clinic attended the programme as Resource Person and explained how some of the youths have fallen prey to drug abuse and how these youths can be rehabilitated and brought to the mainstream of society.

The webinar was arranged by Dr Lakhimi Gogoi, Assistant Professor and NSS Programme Officer, Narengi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya and moderated by Sumitra Devi Chetri, Assistant Professor, Department of English of the college. A total of 250 persons comprising of NSS volunteers, programme officers and students participated in the webinar, stated a release.
