GUWAHATI: Traffic police personnel monitor traffic movement under the scorching sun and heavy rains in many parts of the city as there are no proper shaded stands at many places and some of the existing traffic stands are not in shape because of poor upkeep.
Speaking to The Sentinel a traffic policeman said, “Yes, we need proper traffic stands. We’re employees appointed by the government. Unlike others, we can’t protest and demand what we need. We’re bound to do our duty amidst heat and no matter if it rains. But a proper initiative is necessary in this regard. You can see the TC point near Guwahati Club is a very busy area where three to four personnel must be there for maintaining traffic. But, in that place too there’s no such facility.”
It seems lack of traffic stands creates a problematic situation for the personnel to maintain traffic during heavy rainfall. One such example is Lamb Road where there is no such facility for personnel to work when it rains. Another personnel said, “Our duty starts at 7 in the morning till 2 noon, and the one working from 7 am-2 pm is replaced by another personnel who has to be on duty from 2 pm to 10 pm. We’ve no problem in doing our duty. But, yes, I would like to say that a little facility is needed, especially when it rains.”
