GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of Rs 20 lakh crore financial package to revive the country's economy, on Wednesday.

Saikia said that the announcement by the PM is applaudable but the government should wait and analyze the situation that arises after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Saikia asserted that the will power of the stranded labourers who have been facilitated to their native places, will play a major role to revive the industrial sector and boost the economy. Prior to this, the Central government introduced the Make in India movement but under the banner the growth of the Indian Industries did not meet the expectations, said Saikia.

"The 20 lakh crore package is welcomed but success of the scheme will depend on its implementation. Because the government had made various similar announcements in the past but they were not implemented," said the leader.

Slamming the financial inclusion programmes - Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, Saikia said these schemes were not successfully implemented. "These schemes aimed to feed the poor and provide one-time financial assistance of Rs 500. According to a survey by Azim Premji University and other independent organizations, out of 80 crore people, 25 crore people didn't receive food materials under the Food Security Act during the lockdown," he said.

"We need to need to give assurance to needy people so that their will power is not lost. We will have to take the economy forward along with them," the leader added.
