GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has observed that the financial condition of some beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme has improved. So, the government has taken a policy decision to delete the names of such beneficiaries.

The government has almost completed an audit of the beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme to assess their economic condition. A meeting of the district-level monitoring committees will then be held soon and on the basis of the audit, it will be decided whose names will be deleted from the beneficiary list. The Deputy Commissioner of each district is the chairman of the district-level monitoring committee.

According to sources, State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog had held a virtual meeting with all Deputy Commissioners on Monday and in the meeting, she had directed the DCs to start the process of deleting the name of ineligible beneficiaries from this month.

Orunodoi, which is implemented by the Finance Department, is one of the prime women-centric flagship programmes of the State Government. The Assam government has been transferring Rs 1,250 as monetary benefit to the bank accounts of economically weak women on the 10th of every month under the Orunodoi scheme. The programme, launched in October 2020, initially entailed Rs 830 per month. Last year, it was enhanced to Rs 1,000 per month and this year it was hiked to Rs 1,250. The enhancement of the monthly grant under Orunodoi was announced in the State Budget 2022-23. The additional Rs 250 has been granted as subsidy for 50 units of electricity. There are more than 19 lakh beneficiaries – all women – under the scheme at present.
