GUWAHATI: The Pamohi Fruits and Vegetable Wholesale Market of Kamrup Metro which was closed due to the COVID situation was reopened on Friday.

The market was closed on May 12 due to the surging COVID cases in the district.

Talking to The Sentinel, assistant secretary of the wholesale market Dilip Kumar Das said, "On May 28, we submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner urging him to reopen the market. Later, on June 16, the District Development Commissioner and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of District Disaster Management Authority allowed to reopen the market following all the COVID protocols."

Das said that the market's administration has made some rules and regulations for the vendors to follow.

"The wholesale market has 360 stalls out of which 126 are wholesalers with godowns and the rest are retailers. We have directed the vendors to follow the 'odd-even rule' according to their shop number. The shopkeepers have been directed to avoid gathering of people and if a vendor breaks the rules, the stall will be shut down," said Das.

He said that the entire market has been sanitized and every shopkeeper will have to wear masks and his/her shop should have sanitization facilities.

It is to be noted that the Pamohi market is under the Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board. During the first wave of COVID-19 last year, the market was closed from March 24 to the first week of September.

"Though the market was closed last year, vendors were allowed to sell vegetables at different designated spots of the city. Today we opened the market but only 37 types of vegetables are available. Within a week, all types of vegetables will be available and we are also monitoring the rates," Das added.
