GUWAHATI: State Forest and Environment, Excise and Fishery Minister Parimal Suklabaidya has assured the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Yuva Parishad (NBMYP) that he would take steps with the minister concerned on the issue of central OBC (other backward community) listing of the community. The community has been kept on the tenterhook for a long time on this particular issue by the Central Government and the situation now needs a push from the State Government.

Strangely enough, while the Bishnupriya Manipuris of Tripura have been listed as OBCs by the Central Government, their counterparts in Assam have not been included in the Central OBC list.

Retired IFS Manindra Sinha, who is the president of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha, spoke at length on the Central OBC listing of the community to let the minister know where the process of the listing got stuck, and why.

The Yuva Parishad had its annual general meeting, 2019 at Radha-Madhab Sebashram, Maligaon here on Sunday where minister Suklabaidya was the chief guest.

The meeting presided over by its president Narendra Sinha also discussed other issues like the teaching of the Bishnupriya Manipuri language in schools. Former SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) director and writer Kumkum Sinha delved deep into the matter and suggested ways stating as to how the situation can be improved.

Earlier, Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum president DILS Lakshmindra Sinha spoke on NRC and exclusion of any member from the community from the list of citizens being updated. He urged the Yuva Parishad to take up the matter seriously so as ensure that no genuine Indian citizen of the community is left out from the final NRC.
