GUWAHATI: Leaders of various political parties are miffed at the Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) deferring the scheduled all-party meeting for Zila Parishad chairperson and vice chairperson quota fixation, without any prior intimation.

In sync with the age-old practice, the all-party meeting for the fixation of quota for selection of chairpersons and vice chairpersons of the Zila Parishad was called at the Juripar, Panjabari office of the P&RD Commissioner at 12 noon on Tuesday. Representatives of the BJP, the Congress, the AIUDF and other parties arrived at the meeting venue at the scheduled time. They had to kill 45 minutes there with the hope that the crucial meeting would be held. However, one of the officials, at last, informed them that the meeting had been deferred. The information was jaw-dropping for them and most of the party representatives did not take that at ease. They want to drive home that the meeting can be deferred for any emergency circumstances, but the information for the deferment should be intimated to them, if need be, over the telephone at least before leaving for the meeting.

Congress MLA Wazed Ali Choudhury said: “We have been shocked! We have been invited officially. After coming here and killing over 45 minutes they let us know that the meeting has been deferred. This doesn’t augur well. This isn’t office decorum either. We should have been informed of the deferment of the meeting at least in the morning.”

Now the meeting is scheduled to be held on January 24.

This meeting is a must for the fixation of reservation of posts of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons for SC, ST and women. The ZPs are yet to be formed after the panchayat poll conducted recently.
