Placement of state youth trained under PMKVY yet to pick up pace

GUWAHATI: The percentage of youth in Assam who had undergone training under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and got placements till December 2022 is 9.32 percent, compared to 17.74 percent at the national level.

According to sources, 7,20,740 candidates from Assam underwent training under the PMKVY, and 67,230 of them got placements in various sectors till December 2022.

PMKVY is the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), implemented by the National Skill Development Corporation. The objective of this skill certification scheme is to enable youth to take up industry-relevant skill training that will help them secure a better livelihood. Assam Skill Development Mission trains youth in the state through PMKVY.

Since its inception in 2015, youth have been trained under PMKVY in three phases: PMKVY 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. In PMKVY 1.0, as many as 3,694 of the 33,408 (11.05 percent) trained youths got placements. In PMKVY 2.0, as many as 60,808 of the 6,54,610 trained youths (9.2 percent) got placements. In PMKVY 3.0, as many as 2,227 of 32,722 trained youths (8.33 percent) got placements.

At the national level, 24,35,740 of the 1,37,24,196 youths (17.74 percent) who had undergone training under the scheme got placements until December 2022.

According to sources in the Assam Skill Development Mission, the lack of adequate industrial prospects in Assam makes the youths of the state trained under the PMVKY not get sufficient job avenues. The placement of such trained youths is comparatively better in the states that have various kinds of industries.

Only industrial development in the state can brighten the future of such trained youths in the state.
