GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his tweeter handle condoles the death of Archbishop Rev. Dominic Jala of Shillong on Saturday, saying, he was anguished by the passing of the Archbishop.
In a fatal road accident, Archbishop Rev. Dominic Jala of the Archdiocese, Shillong, passed away in California at age of 68. The incident took place on 10th October when he, along with another Indian priest, Father Mathew Vellankal were traveling to Clearlake in California along with Father Joseph Parekkatt, another Indian priest.
According to reports from the diocese of Oakland, their car crashed with a semi-truck in Colussa Country, California at around 11 pm (10:30 am on October 11 India time).
Father Joseph Parekkatt, who was severely wounded, has been admitted to a hospital and is reported to be stable.
Reports from Salesian sources in Shillong say Archbishop was going to California to meet his friend. He had gone to the US to attend a meeting of the International Commission for English liturgy in New York.
Archbishop Jala was born on July 12, 1951, in Mawlai in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya.
He was the provincial of the congregation's Guwahati province before he was appointed the archbishop of Shillong in December 1999.
