PM Narendra Modi urged to conduct aerial survey of floods in Assam

GUWAHATI: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Badruddin Ajmal has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to undertake an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of the State to assess the current situation.

In a recent letter to the Prime Minister, Ajmal also requested that the Centre should grant a special package of at least Rs 10,000 crore for providing proper relief and ensuring rehabilitation of the flood-affected people. Further, the AIUDF leader urged the Prime Minister to take an initiative to find a permanent solution to twin problems of flood and erosion in Assam.

The letter mentioned that the flood situation in the State is worse this time in comparison with previous years. It stated that floods are causing loss of lives and damaging houses, crops, roads and bridges on a large scale. "Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, is also among worst affected places in the State as the flood waters hit the roads and even entered houses and offices. The landslide and continuous rain are creating more havoc in the State. Several dozen of people lost their lives and animals washed away in flood water," the letter stated.

Quoting reports of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Ajmal mentioned that at least 15 lakh people have been badly affected in 25 districts of the State, including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Karbi Anglong West, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Morigaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar.
