GUWAHATI: The rhino population in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has shown a slight but encouraging increase in the last four years. This was discovered during a two-day rhino census at the sanctuary, which ended on Wednesday.
The census found 107 rhinos in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, as against 102 rhinos found there during a similar census in 2018.
The latest census has identified 30 male, and 50 female rhinos, along with 27 calves.
According to sources, the sanctuary was divided into nine blocks for carrying out the block-count-system census, which was conducted by 11 census-takers and nine observers.
Those involved in the census as census-takers and observers included officials of the forest department officials, members of the NGO Aaranyak, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Elephant Foundation and a local voluntary organization.
It may be mentioned that the 38.81 sq km area of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has the densest population of rhinos in India.
Moreover, there has been no incident of rhino poaching in the sanctuary since 2014.
