GUWAHATI: Violence erupted between the inmates of two hostels of the Cotton University here on Wednesday night following declaration of results of elections to the Cotton University Students' Union (CUCU, leaving many students with varying degrees of injury.
Inmates of each hostel lodged FIRs at the Panbazar Police Station against the inmates of the other hostel.
According to police sources, Sudhir Das, an inmate of the Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan (MNDP) Hostel has lodged a complaint alleging that some inmates of the Sitanath Brahma Choudhury (SNBC) Hostel attacked him and fellow-inmates with sticks and also pelted stones at them and their hostel. Das' FIR claimed that more than 15 inmates of the MNDP Hostel were injured in the attack and that one of them, Pragyan Pratim Bora, has had to be admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with critical injuries.
The Panbazar Police Station has registered a case (No. 07/22 u/s 143/148/336/337/338/325/427 IPC) on the basis of Das' FIR.
On the other hand, Deeepjyoti Baishya, an inmate of the SNBC Hostel also lodged an FIR at the same police station, alleging that some inmates of the MNDP Hostel had attacked him and fellow-inmates with sticks and also pelted stones at them and their hostel, leaving many of them injured.
The Panbazar Police Station has registered a case (No. 08/22 U/S-143/148/336/337/338/325/427 IPC) on the basis of Baishya's FIR.
According to the police sources, 24 students of Cotton University received treatment on Wednesday night as a result of the violence. Some security personnel also received minor injuries while trying to stop the violence.
