GUWAHATI: President of India Droupadi Murmu today flagged off the Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition, 2023 at Koinadhara State Guest House in Guwahati today. She handed over the Ice-Axe Baton with the National Flag and the expedition flag to team leader Manash Baruah.

Inaugurating the programme, she said, "Kunchenjunga is a beautiful creation of Mother Nature. I feel lucky to be able to bless the mountaineers at the inaugural ceremony of their expedition. I pray for the success of this expedition that will inspire future mountaineers."

Assam Governor Golab Chanda Kataria, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the officials involved in the Mount Kunckenjunga Expedition were also present at the function.

Before the flagging of the expedition, chief of the mission Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Governor with a phulam gamosa. The chief convener of the expedition, Satyen Sarma, handed over the memoir of the expedition to the President of India. The president of Assam Mountaineers' Association, Dr Devendra Sarma, handed over the souvenir published on the occasion of the expedition to the President of India.

The expedition team comprises seven members, and they will leave for Siliguri on April 11 by train. From Siliguri, they leave for Taplejung in Nepal to track at the base camp at a height of 5200 metres on the Himalayas. They are scheduled to reach the base camp on April 20. From there, they will have to cross four base camps to reach the summit camp expectedly between May 13 and 18.
