GUWAHATI: Following the ongoing problem related to the creation of headmaster posts in the primary schools of the state, teachers of the primary schools of the state visited their respective Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs) to return their tablets. While many of the offices accepted the tablets from the teachers, many others declined to accept them, citing the non-receipt of orders from seniors regarding the same. Leading to the teachers remaining adamant about their decision not to work on the Sikha Setu application.
Over 36,000 teachers from 140 educational zones participated in the protest and returned the tablets on Monday. The protest was called by the Assam State Primary Teachers Association in collaboration with the All Boro Primary Teachers Association, the All Assam TET Passed Teachers Association, and the State Pool Teachers Association. The protesters mentioned that they have not been taking part in the working of the application for the last 21 days, but the education department has not paid heed to their demands. Answering the call of the Assam State Primary Teachers Association, the teachers have also refrained from taking part in the training regarding the application.
They also mentioned that since 1982, multiple discussions have taken place, but the post of headmaster has not been created yet. The post of Senior Assistant Teacher of Primary Schools in the state was announced in a letter on December 17, 2020, but it has not been implemented till now. The decision taken by the education department was not approved by the finance department, which showed a lack of coordination among various departments in the state.
The president also expressed resentment at the silence of the education minister, who promised to get the approval of the finance department under his supervision. The president of the organisation, Akhil Chandra Nath, and general secretary Ratul Chandra Goswami said that some resource centre coordinators have gone beyond their duties and done various works for the schools under their supervision with their mobile phones. But it is necessary to take measures to ensure that communication between the coordinators and teachers is not interrupted.
The president also added that the education minister should keep his promise made on December 21, 2022. The previous protest was called off on his request, but he failed to fulfil his promises and has lost the opportunity to request again. The department has not announced any steps taken to resolve the issue, leaving nothing new to discuss regarding the matter until the post is created by the department.
