Probe ordered into encroachments of government land at Dakhingaon

 Eviction drives on illegally-occupied land of Geology Directorate soon

GUWAHATI: State Mines & Minerals Minister Jogen Mohan, on Friday, ordered an inquiry by Revenue officials into the massive encroachment of government land at Dakshingaon here. The probe will on "who" and "since when" the encroachments have been taking place there. The Minister told The Sentinel that after receiving the probe report, eviction drives will be carried out there.

The step was taken after the Minister visited the Directorate earlier during the day.

At a time when voices are being raised against encroachments of all kinds, it is rather strange that more than 50% of land allocated to a Directorate at Dakhingaon here, has been illegally occupied.

According to sources of the 'Directorate of Geology & Mining, Assam,' said, "A total of around 63 bighas of land were allocated to the Directorate. However the encroachments have been taking place prior to 2011. Since that year, there has been no fresh illegal occupation in the Directorate's land."

The sources added, "As on date, around 25 bighas are free of encroachments. The Directorate now wants the other illegally-occupied land freed from encroachers as the new State government has come up with many innovative ideas for the Directorate. And now, we will be requiring the land for the office and staff quarters of the proposed battalion for the Directorate."
