GUWAHATI: A programme on cocoa cultivation titled -Field Day on Cocoa was held at Borjhar village, Kamrup (Rural) to make the farmers aware about the prospects of cocoa cultivation. The programme was conducted by ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Research centre, Kahikuchi. It was sponsored by Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development (DCCD), (Government of India) Kerala. Various State department officials, NGO personnel and more than 150 farmers attended the programme.

In the inaugural speech DrAlpana Das, Scientist in Charge, ICAR-CPCRI, Kahikuchi highlighted the various aspects of cocoa cultivation in Assam. Dr Das emphasized on intercropping of cocoa under arecanut and coconut cultivation for enhancing the income of farmers.

Chief guest of the programme, Manoj Das, Managing Director, NERAMAC highlighted the various activities of his Institute and motivated the farmers by assuring an FPO in the said village. Panchayat president BabitaBaishya, Panchayat member BhupenMazumder and Social worker TariniKanta Das also graced the occasion. In the function one of the progressive farmer Nagendra Das was felicitated.

After the inaugural session, a presentation on cocoa cultivation and post harvest technology, disease and pest management was also held.
