GUWAHATI: A sit-in demonstration was staged at the Sri Bhangara Gosain Than premises in the Deepor Beel area on Sunday to protest against the pollution created by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) dumping ground at Belortol in Paschim Boragaon here.

The demonstration was staged under the aegis of the Deepor Beel Suraksha Mancha and saw the participation of some other organizations, besides local residents.

The protestors said that in February this year the GMC had assured them that the dumping ground would be operated in a scientific way. When this commitment was not honoured, the Mancha resorted to an agitational programme in May. At that point, GMC Commissioner Devashish Sharma reassured them that scientific disposal of waste material would commence at the dumping ground within a month. However, that assurance has also been not fulfilled and hence today's protest was staged, the protestors said.

Residents of 16 nearby villages participated in the sit-in demonstration.

Later, the Circle Officer of Azara, Priyangshu Bharadwaj, arrived at the protest site and the protestors handed over a memorandum to him for submission to the Chief Secretary of Assam. The memorandum contains several demands, including removal of the dumping ground from Belortol in order to protect Deepor Beel.
