GUWAHATI: Scores of members from the Chandrapur Anchalik Chatra Santha (CACS) on Wednesday blocked the Homen Borgohain Path in Chandrapur to stop the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) vehicles from dumping garbage at the newly shifted dumping ground in the area.

A total of 21 GMC vehicles were stopped by the protestors who were raising slogans against the government's decision. The protestors requested the police officials to escort the vehicles back from the area.

"The police baton-charged the protestors during which two persons – Rupam Kalita (26) and Sankar Das (32) were injured. As many as 18 protestors were arrested and taken to the Noonmati Police Station. Later, hundreds of women from Chandrapur staged a protest in front of Pragjyotishpur Police Station demanding the release of the arrested persons," stated a protestor.

The students' body has condemned the police for 'thrashing' the protestors.

CACS president Nitul Kalita and general secretary Saurabh Das slammed the government for letting the police 'lathi charge' people who were democratically protesting. "We will continue to stage protests until the government rolls back its decision," said Kalita.

The CACS underlined that it will stage a 'Satyagraha' on Thursday to oppose the government's decision.
