GUWAHATI: Beltola Bazaar, which is the oldest traditional market in Guwahati, is struggling for space and, at the same time, creating problems for commuters. The bi-weekly market, on Thursdays and Sundays, receives the highest footfalls, which eventually leads to problems at certain points in time. The market, which stretches from Beltola Tiniali to Jayanagar, creates a lot of congestion for commuters.

One of the commuters said, "It is impossible to travel on Thursday from that lane, as it is very crowded, and in recent times, new vendors are adding more to the crowd. There is no proper traffic management, and vendors just take their place wherever there is a little amount of space."

According to GMC officials, "Beltola Market is important as it is essential for the residential people of the area. As it is a huge market, controlling the traffic as well as the commuters is a huge task. We do make arrangements for the parking of the vehicles, but still, there is a lot to change in the management."

Another resident said, "The market size is increasing day by day with various new vendors, but there is no proper traffic management. The roads get blocked, and one cannot park their vehicles even in a parking lot. If one has to shop, then morning hours are the only option."

One of the residents said, "The GMC authorities are not working enough for the betterment of the market or for managing the public. They have just imposed certain rules but are not actually working on them. Traffic congestion is the major concern; if the market is extended, then people cannot move into the market."
