Railway Protection Force seizes contraband items worth crores in three years

GUWAHATI: The personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF) of NF Railways (NFR) detected 654 cases of smuggling of contraband items and arrested 185 persons during the last three years (up to July 2020). The value of the seized items is worth Rs. 17,93,72,180. In two incidents on August 20 also, RPF personnel of NFR recovered consignments of such contraband items. In one incident that day, while conducting their rounds on the Guwahati Railway station platforms at about 02:10 pm, they noticed some parcel packages lying on Platform No 6/7 of Guwahati Railway station. Later, it was found that the packages are loaded with chewing tobacco (gutkha) packets. On counting, 90 packages found.

As per the railway booking marks, the consignments were booked from New Delhi to Guwahati. The recovered packages were unloaded from VPU No 078270, which had arrived at Guwahati on August 20 by parcel special train No 00402 UP.

The search team comprised Guwahati RPF Sub Inspector D Barman, RPF (Post) constable Sangram Singh, Head Constable MR Deka (CIB), Guwahati, along with officers and staffs of GRPS. As transportation of tobacco product is banned by the Government of Assam, these recovered parcel packages containing chewing tobacco packets have been seized by GRP in the presence of RPF and other witnesses. In this regard, the OC of GRPS, Guwhatai, has registered one GD entry vide No 358 dated 20.08.20. No arrest has been made so far, stated a release.
