GUWAHATI: At a time when contractual teachers are up in arms over the Government's decision to start an annual appraisal of their respective performances, Assam's Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Wednesday that a similar exercise will be carried out for regular teachers as well.
Talking to the media here, Pegu said, "Regular teachers will be appraised through the Annual Confidential Report (ACR), while contractual teachers will be apprised through the online appraisal application."
Reacting to opposition of the annual appraisal system by the contractual teachers, the Education Minister said, "They have got jobs after signing a contract. Now employees are giving directives to the employer, which I fail to understand. The contractual teachers are the employees and the Government is the employer, and as the employer the Government wants to evaluate whether the employees are providing the minimum required input. Hence, the annual appraisal system has been introduced."
Pegu reiterated that the system has been introduced in accordance with the provisions of the contract.
Regarding objections over the marking system, Pegu asserted that an evaluation process must include a marking system.
It is pertinent to mention that during the day, the Education Minister also distributed 20 Casio calculators each to 196 schools which registered pass percentages over 90 per cent in this year's High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination.
Speaking on the occasion, Pegu said that in the time to come computer skills will be mandatory for aspiring teachers, because only then will they be able to impart this knowledge to their students.
