GUWAHATI: The State Health and Family Welfare department has prepared a project proposal with an estimated cost of around Rs 360 crore for the installation of health infrastructure of life-saving medical equipments under NESIDS (North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme) in its different districts to face any pandemic in future, besides COVID-19. As many as 24 such hospitals have been identified for the installation of such equipments.

Since the fight against COVID-19 is going to be a long-drawn-out affair, it is imperative on the part of the State Health and Family Welfare department to be equipped with all health infrastructures to face any eventuality.

NESID, a 100 per centrally-funded scheme under the Ministry of DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region), is a tailor-made one for the development of health infrastructure in Assam and other north-eastern States. The T&D (Transformation and Development) department, the nodal agency for NESID, has submitted the proposal of the State Health Department to the DoNER.

According to sources in the State T&D department, the proposal is under examination of the DoNER. DoNER has already allocated Rs 148.62 crore to Assam for fiscal 2020-21 to strengthen health infrastructure in the State in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak. Since the estimated cost of the project exceeds the total allocation of NESID fund for the State for this fiscal, the fate of the proposal depends on the Ministry of DoNER.
