AGP sounds LS poll bugle

GUWAHATI: The AGP sounded the Lok Sabha poll bugle in the presence of thousands of party workers here today.

The regional party had been holding party workers’ meetings at Kaliabor, Mangaldai, Tezpur, and Nagaon for the past two months, with its sights set on the forthcoming Lok Sabha election. As part of the series of meetings, the AGP held a workers’ meeting in Guwahati today. Thousands of workers from ten Assembly constituencies under Gauhati Lok Sabha Constituency took part in the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, AGP president and cabinet minister Atul Bora said, “We have two elections in front of us: the panchayat poll and the Lok Sabha poll. We are in an alliance with the BJP. This alliance will sweep the 2024 Lok Sabha poll in the state. I appeal to the party workers to get ready for the poll and go to the people of the state.”

Bora further said, “The people of Assam still treat the AGP as the main regional party. Our party workers should respect the feelings of the people of the state. We have no representation in the Lok Sabha. However, we will send a representative to the next Lok Sabha. The panchayat poll will be ahead of the Lok Sabha poll. We need to fight this poll strongly.”

AGP working president and minister Keshab Mahanta said, “Every state in the Northeast, including Assam, has bases for regionalism. All AGP leaders and workers need to avail themselves of this scope.”

Senior AGP MLS Phani Bhushan Choudhury, party general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Rajya Sabha MP and AGP general secretary Birendra Prasad Baishya, and other senior leaders of the party spoke at the meeting.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Bora said, “We have held workers’ meetings in five Lok Sabha constituencies. We will also hold similar meetings in the other nine Lok Sabha constituencies in phases. The AGP is a constituent of the BJP-led alliance. The BJP and the AGP will be 100 percent successful in the next Lok Sabha election. Our target is to win all the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state.”

When asked about the number of candidates the party will field in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, Bora said, “We have not yet decided the number of seats to contest. The BJP will field some candidates, and we will also field some. We are sure that the next Lok Sabha will have representation from the AGP.”
