GUWAHATI: Several former employees of the Assam Fisheries Development Corporation (AFDC) staged a protest on Wednesday at Chachal against their removal from their jobs after five years of service to the corporation. They also undertook a torturing programme as a mark of protest, and a memorandum regarding the same was submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam, demanding his interference in the matter.

It is important to note that the grandson of noted freedom fighter and martyr Kushal Konwar, Rahul Konwar, was also among the 25 people appointed by the corporation and took part in the protests today.

According to reports, a total of 25 people were employed as per the decision taken by the executive board of directors in a meeting taken on March 8, 2017 for the management of beels on the basis of experience. The board also approved their employment on 11/9/2017. They also received 11 months of training at the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute in Guwahati and the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture in Bhubaneshwar. They were sacked from their jobs in 2018, but following a ruling by the Gauhati High Court, they were reinstated as contractual and casual employees of the corporation. Although the court had ordered their incorporation into the department based on their experience and expertise, they were removed again along with the illegal appointments on July 30, 2022. Although three of them were retained, the remaining 22 people were sacked by the corporation.
