GUWAHATI: Resentment brews among employees of the Assam Secretariat following the suicide of Secretariat employee Bibek Das.

Bibek Das (40) from Barpeta lived alone in Jawaharnagar Housing Colony in Guwahati. He hanged himself to death on Monday. Police recovered his body and sent it to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem. He had written a suicide note where he had cited harassment by high-level officers at the Secretariat as the reason for his suicide.

The Sadao Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) has demanded an inquiry into the suicide. SAKP secretary general in-charge Shyamanta Das said that Bibek Das' suicide note clearly mentioned the names of high-level officers who were pressurizing him for mistakes that he had not committed. The mental harassment took such a toll on him that Bibek Das eventually took the extreme step of ending his life, said the SAKP secretary general in-charge.

SAKP demanded action against the officers whose names are mentioned in the suicide note. Shyamanta Das said that this was not the only case of harassment of Secretariat employees by officers. Such mental harassment goes on in other departments of the Secretariat as well. "This harassment should stop. Officers should treat employees properly," said Shyamanta Das.

Meanwhile, the body of Bibek Das was brought to the Assam Secretariat on Tuesday where the employees paid him tribute.
