GUWAHATI: Satellite phones will be used in some polling stations during the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) polls.

The KAAC will go to polls on June 8, 2022. There are 906 polling stations under the KAAC in the Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. There are still some villages in these districts which lack mobile connectivity. Hence, satellite phones will be used in some polling stations during the KAAC polls, said sources in the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC). The satellite phones will be operated by the Assam Police.

For the smooth conduct of the polls, the ASEC has appointed a Special Observer and seven Observers. The Special Observer and Observers will ensure that the polls are conducted in a free and fair manner and that the poll expenses of the candidates do not exceed the maximum expenditure limit of Rs 4.50 lakh fixed by the Election Commission for the KAAC polls. Amitabh Rajkhowa, retired Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Assam, has been appointed as the Special Observer.

The counting of votes will take place on June 12, 2022. The KAAC has 7,03,298 voters - 3,55,503 males, 3,47,790 females and five third gender. The total number of constituencies is 26.
