GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students Union) and 30 other organisations have urged the Government of Assam to urgently adopt measures for securing the land rights of the indigenous people of the State. In this regard, the organisations also stated that the steps should be taken in accordance with the recommendations of the 'Hari Shankar Brahma Committee'. The organisations further demanded measures for protecting the tribal belts and blocks.

This was stated by AASU GS (general secretary) Shankar Jyoti Baruah with reference to the burning issues of the State on which the organisations deliberated at a meeting here on Saturday. Several other key resolutions were also adopted in the meeting.

The organisations appealed to the Centre and also the north¬-eastern States to resolve the inter-State boundary issue, peacefully and through dialogues. A press statement of the organisations signed by AASU GS Baruah maintained, "The Assam government must protect the rights of the people living in the areas of Assam along the inter-State boundary.

The organisations further demanded steps for the overall development of the government and vernacular-medium educationals institutions in the State. The 31 organisations further demanded measures to adddress the issues being faced by the students in the technical and non-technical vocational sector.

They also suggested introduction of shiftwise sessions to accomodate the eligible students for admission into the next higher courses in both the post-HSLC and also post-HS stages.
