GUWAHATI: The victims of microfinance companies on Saturday claimed that the companies are continuously harassing the women and poor people in the rural areas of Assam.

In a convention organized here at the Guwahati Press Club on Saturday, the Microfinance Shoshan Birodhi Joutha Sangrami Mancha (MSBJSM) raised several demands to the Microfinance companies, the Reserve Bank and the government. Besides urging the government to ensure a healthy lifestyle for the poor victims, the MSBJSM demanded the microfinance companies to resettle the families of micro-borrowers and compensation for those who have committed suicide due to debt-recovery related harassment.

The MSBJSM further appealed to the Reserve Bank to cancel the license of those companies who are running with flouting rules. The organization demanded to publicly publish the names of those companies to whom the government has granted permission to provide loans.

Talking to the media, chief convener and general secretary of MSBJSM Arup Kumar Mahanta said, “We are against the harassment done by microfinance companies with flouting rules. We have witnessed an increase in suicide cases following harassment due to debt. We want the government to protect and ensure the rights of the micro-borrowers. We want that the consumers should be provided all the necessary documents such as processing fees, insurance, etc. so that it becomes easier for them to understand all the aspects related to loan repayment.”

Demanding protection of the lives and loan waiver for the poor, the MSBJSM also demanded the release of the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) activists and cancellation of the Act.
