SFI urges Assam government to increase the number of seats in colleges

GUWAHATI: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has urged the State Government to increase the number of seats in colleges.

SFI State Secretary Nirangkush Nath, State committee member Susmit Isfaq, and Kamrup (M) district committee member Madhurjya Bhuyan stated in a press release that results of the HSLC and HS examinations were declared on July 30 and July 31 respectively. As the examinations could not be conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the results of both these examinations broke all the previous years' records. The overwhelming increase in the pass percentage will certainly deprive thousands of students from higher education. In this regard, the issue of lack of seats will surely turn the college admission process more chaotic, they said.

The SFI has demanded that the government should ensure that lack of seats does not stand as an obstacle for the qualified students. If required, the number of seats in the educational institutions should be increased. The vacant posts in government institutions, especially the vacancies in the college and higher secondary level, should be filled immediately.

The educational institutions of the private sectors should be brought under constant scrutiny so that they cannot transform education as a profiteering business by taking advantage of this situation. The government should ensure that the fees of the private sector institutions do not increase rapidly. If required, it should be arranged that the students who were denied admission in the government institutions can study in private sector institutions by paying the same amount of fee as in the government institutions.
