Guwahati: Three hotels owned by P K Dutta, a former Assam Police DIG and main accused in the cash-for-jobs scam for recruitment of sub-inspectors into the Assam Police force, have been sealed on Sunday to prevent the "tempering" of evidence. Dutta has been absconding since Wednesday after his involvement in the scam had come to light.
As per reports, raids were conducted in each of these hotels as part of the crackdown into the alleged scam in the recruitment of SIs into the police department.
Candidates who have been arrested for 'leaking' the SI written exam question paper, were asked to reach the hotels in question to "prepare" for the exam.
Reportedly, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Crime Branch of Assam Police team have information that the candidates were taken to these hotels for "secret exams". Bribes to secure Assam Police SI jobs were also handed over in these hotels owned by the former DIG PK Dutta, said reports.
The investigation is also being conducted at several other properties owned by the former DIG, even as Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has promised complete justice in regards to nabbing the crooks involved in the scam.
In another significant development, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Anowar Ali, the driver of the tainted former cop. As per reports, Ali had been working as Dutta's driver for several years.
A certain Jaidev Baruah from Guwahati city -- employed by Dutta to look into the business affairs of the notoriously wealthy police officer -- has also been arrested in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district.
CID officers have been interrogating Anowar about the whereabouts of PK Dutta, who went absconding after the police started investigating the cash-for-jobs scam.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowala has urged the Director-General of Police to bring the culprits to book. Sonowal, in his recent media interactions, has promised that action will be taken against each and every person.
