GUWAHATI: Once completed, the ambitious Silsako Beel conservation and development project envisaged by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will go a long way in protecting the overall ecosystem and environment of a huge portion of Guwahati city.
Stating this here on Tuesday, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania also said that while most portions of Silsako Beel have been already cleared of encroachment, clearing the drains and the natural drainage system associated with the water body will help prevent and reduce inundation and floods in Panjabari, Khanapara, Rukminigaon, Chasal, Borbari, Narangi, Satgaon and several other localities in the future. He was addressing a meeting of residents of Juripar, a residential locality of Panjabari, after laying the foundation stone for construction of Bye-Lane No 12.
Mayor Sarania also said that while the GMC and other related authorities have put in their best efforts to mitigate and minimize the water-logging, flood and drainage problems of the city, the citizens too gave a major role to play, particularly in keeping the drainage system free from garbage.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashim Saikia, Councillor of Ward No 59, sought the cooperation of the residents in making the ward one of the best localities of the city.
Regarding the Juri, a natural stream which flows down from Meghalaya to Silsako Beel, Saikia said the Silsako Beel development project is expected to give a new lease of life to it. Several local residents, including Dr Gopal Chandra Medhi, Prof Galib-uz Zaman and Dr Samudra Gupta Kashyap also pointed out at various problems faced by the residents of Juripar, including floods and water-logging.
