SIT set up by Guwahati Police to investigate scam on medical reimbursement

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police has set up a SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe the medical reimbursement scam. The SIT will be led by ADCP (Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police)-East.

Police sources informed that only six persons have reported in the Bhangagarh Police Station till September 7, 2021 (Tuesday) — the last date given by the Police to the persons named by the FIR (First Information Report).

Mentionably, the Bhangagarh Police had issued notices in this scam to 39 employees to appear for questioning.

These employees are from three State government departments — APDCL (Assam Power Distribution, Elementary Education, and Finance.

Meanwhile, a person — identified as Ganesh Kalita — was arrested from a city locality on the night of Monday for alleged involvement in the scam. Kalita works as a vaccinator in the State Dispensary, Khanapara. He reportedly forged the medical referral certificates. Kalita was produced before the CJM Court on Tuesday; and, the Court remanded him to three days police custody.

Sources further informed that "search is on for two more persons who had forged the certificates".

The scam was detected by the State-level Referral Board, GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital ), had detected. The Board found that fake referral certificates had been submitted by a number of government employees to get medical reimbursement.

The GMCH authority lodged three FIRs against 39 such government employees at the Bhangagarh Police Station.
