GUWAHATI, Feb 18: The All India Mahila Sanskritic Sangathan (AIMSS) and the All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO) staged demonstrations at Dighalipukhuripar in Guwahati today demanding security for students and women in the State. They demand of the government to ensure exemplary punishment to all those involved in the molestation of a girl in Jorhat recently.

They organized a protest meeting there presided over by AIMSS’ state president I Hussain. Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Chitralekha Das said: “Such incidents are the results of moral erosion because of availability of drugs, cultural onslaught, pornography, massive use of mobile and internet etc., in society. The ictiveness on the part of the government in tackling such incidents also adds to the problem.”

I Hussain said: “The incident at Jorhat has exposed how unsecured girl students in the Stare are now. The recent statements from a minister of the State Cabinet and the State president of the BJP on the issue have proved it beyond doubt that they want to shrug off their responsibility of providing security to students and women.”

There were also demonstrations on the issue by the Sadou Asom Pragatisheel ri Santha, Nikhil Bharat Gatantrik Mahila Samiti, Asom Mahila Sangha and YWCA and other organizations at Dighalipukhuripar. They said that in the absence of security for women the ‘jaati, maati aru bheti’ slogan of the State Government would bear no fruits.
