GUWAHATI: The Social Welfare Department looks after the development of the PWDs (persons with disabilities) by introducing various beneficiary oriented schemes. However, a section of officials is being alleged to demanding bribe from specially-abled beneficiaries. This allegation was proved right after an audio clip of an employee demanding bribe for such a scheme went viral.
Recently, PSSA (Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam) secretary Nripen Malakar submitted the audio clip along with other evidence to the head of the Social Welfare Department. The audio clip contains a discussion between a visually impaired student — Rituraj Das and Mausumi Barman, an LDA-cum-Typist of the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer of Kamrup.
Malakar said that Barman demanded a bribe of Rs 1,000 from the visually impaired student. Thus, based on Malakar's evidence, the Social Welfare Department has suspended Barman.
"On being satisfied with the materials on record, I am satisfied with the fact that Barman has willfully violated the Service Rules that amounts to misconduct and misbehaviour of service," stated the Director of Social Welfare Department.
Malakar underlined, "Not only Barman, but the government should also keep an eye on other workers of the department as well. In all offices of the Social Welfare Department, a section of officials are taking bribe in the name of providing social welfare."
