GUWAHATI: In an operation against inter-state gold smuggling, a joint team from the Special Task Force (STF), Assam and Jorabat police seized gold wire weighing 518 grams and nabbed four smugglers, along with the vehicle used for smuggling the precious yellow metal, at Jorabat on Thursday morning.

Acting upon input from a reliable source about illegal transportation of gold, an operation was launched in the morning of Thursday by a team from STF, Assam at Jorabat, Guwahati. A local police team from Jorabat Outpost (OP) of Guwahati city also accompanied the STF team for the said operation.

Accordingly, the joint team from STF and Jorabat OP intercepted a Hyundai Xcent car bearing registration number ML 05 N 8712 at Jorabat at around 9:30AM and the car as well as all four persons travelling in the car were examined thoroughly. During the search, gold wires rounded into five coils weighing a total of 518 grams were found in their possession. The gold was acquired and transported illegally from Meghalaya for selling to customers in Rajashthan.

The four apprehended miscreants were identified as- 1) Md Inayat Ali (30yrs), S/O Lt Abdul Rashid of Ward No. 23 New Kohinoor Chowpasini Road, PS- Pratap Nagar, Dist.- Jodhpur Rajasthan, 2) Sri Veeru Singh (27yrs) S/O Baldev Singh of Bara Bazar Punjabi Colony, PS-Containment Beat House, Shillong, Meghalaya, 3) Md. Yusuf (39yrs) S/O Lt Barkat Ali of Pholodi, PS-Pholodi, Dist.-Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and 4) Mrs. Jannat Begum (56yrs) D/O Lt. Mohammed Hussain of Jail Road, Shillong, Meghalaya. The recovered gold items and the Hyundai Xcel car have been duly seized from their possession.

The STF team handed over the four apprehended persons and the recovered items to Jorabat Police for initiating an investigation and taking further action according to law, by registering a case under appropriate sections of the law.
