GUWAHATI: From low-value, low-cost products like toys and crackers to high-value items like electronics, Chinese commodities have flooded the North East markets notwithstanding boycott calls of such products to safeguard interest of local manufacturers.
Fancy Chinese lights and lamps have thwarted the business of the local potters. During the Diwali festival, these potters have a chance to improve their livelihood through the beautiful earthen diyas that they sell in the city markets but of late, the attraction of Chinese fancy lighting have left the business of the local potters in the dark.
A trader at Fancy Bazar said going by a conservative estimate in the electronic industry the share of Chinese products in the market has reached nearly 50 per cent. In the lighting industry the share of Chinese LED lights in the market is roughly 20 per cent even as most of the decorating lights sold during Diwali, are Chinese-made.
To combat the ensuing problem and to give the local potters a boost, State BJP distributed 25 thousand earthen lamps (diyas) at Dighali Pukhuri on Saturday. The State BJP has been practicing this move since the past five years with the association of the BJP Yuva Mancha. Guwahati MP Queen Ojha, State general secretary Pulok Gohain, media panelist Subhas Dutta were also present for the event.
