GUWAHATI: The State BJP has welcomed, what it said, the Centre's decision to bring erosion in Assam under the purview of the National Disaster Management.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, State BJP general secretary PulokGohain said, "Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal did request the 15th Finance Commission to bring erosion in Assam under the National Disaster Management. Responding positively to the plea, the Prime Minister has taken the decision to bring Assam erosion under National Disaster Management. State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass welcomed to decision. The step taken by the Chief Minister for the greater interest of the people of Assam will help solve the long-standing problem of erosion in the State. During the over 60-year-long rule after Independence, the Congress failed to solve erosion and other problems afflicting the State." He said that every year around 8,000 hectares land is gobbled up by various rivers in the State. "Since 1950 around 4.27 lakh hectares agricultural lands have been gobbled up by rivers in the State, rendering 1.25 lakh families homeless," the statement said.
