State BJP welcomes Arunodoi Scheme; APCC says it's allurement

GUWAHATI: The State BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) welcomed the Arunodoi Scheme which was announced by Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently.

The party said that the scheme is an example of the BJP's promise to bring women empowerment with economic self reliance.

"The scheme was announced in the budget and now the government is ready to implement it. It is not just a scheme but it is a move to give respect to the women of the State. Through this scheme, the families whose annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh will receive Rs 830 every month i.e Rs 10,000 annually," said the State BJP.

On the other hand, the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) slammed the scheme and said it has been launched to influence the voters ahead of the Assam Legislative Elections, 2021.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia said the scheme is bereft of human side. It is like a drop of water in the desert for the people, he stated. "According to the guidelines of the scheme, daily Rs 13.33 will be given to the people for medicines. To buy dal, Rs 6.66 per day, Rs 2.66 for sugar and Rs 5 for fruits and vegetables," Saikia pointed out.

He said according to Himanta Biswa Sarma the amount will be deposited in the account of a woman member of each family. At a time when goods' prices are sky rocketing, Rs 830 is not sufficient for a family having three or four members, he asserted. Further, the leader demanded that every family should be given Rs 6,000 every month.

"Due to the Central government's wrong economic policies, both the country and the State's economic condition have weakened. Uncountable families have been shackled in economic crisis due to the lockdown. Thus, along with the poor people, the lower middle class families should also be covered under the Arunodoi Scheme," Saikia stressed.
