GUWAHATI: Standing resolute with strong opposition towards the new land policy taken by Assam Government, the Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samittee, Assam (BASSA) termed it as anti-farmer and anti-people.
Addressing a press conference held at Guwahati Press Club on Monday, BSSA president Prabin Jyoti Kalita said that over 40 lakh people’s lives are directly connected with the policy. He informed that BASSA will oppose the land policy, as it has abolished the rights of over 65,000 indigenous citizens living in different hills of the city by announcing that Dispur is not going to provide land pattas for them. Kalita further alleged that a group of brokers have already started targeting the 5,000 people, who applied for land pattas.
“Land policies are being taken up one after the other and our applications are yet to be contacted by officials, because, we cannot provide them the amount of money as per their demand. However, many people are already getting land pattas in different parts with the help of middleman, but those who should get their land pattas have not received anything. To our astonishment not a single regional organization has uttered a single word in this sensitive matter. This scenario portrays a picture that says the organizations are supporting Dispur’s anti-people attitude to snatch the land rights of the people,” said Kalita.
BASSA adviser Adip Kumar Phukan said, “The government’s announcement to provide three bigha land to people without any survey is actually an attempt to delude the public. This land policy is actually going to help the corporate sector and the policy may be termed as politics of three bigha land.” Demanding ten bighas of land for each farmer in Assam, along with a system to provide land pattas at place, BASSA warned of staging strike from November 8 if their demands are not met.
