Statewide demonstration by AASU wearing black badges & holding black flags

GUWAHATI: Wearing black badges in their lapels and holding black flags, the members of the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) demonstrated for two hours in all district headquarters in the State on Monday. The students' body is sceptical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'lack of concern' for Assam as he didn't utter a single word on Clause VI of the Assam Accord on his third visit to the State this month.

A statement issued to the media on Monday by AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "Our challenge before the Prime Minister was to spell out the date as to when the government will implement Clause VI of the Assam Accord. However, he opted not to utter a single word on the report of the high-level committee on Clause VI of the Accord even in his third visit to the State this month. We condemn the Prime Minister keeping mum on the issue of constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of the State."

On Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the statement said, "Addressing the people of Dhemaji the Prime Minister dared not to make an announcement to stop works of all mega dams till the threat to the people living in downstream is mitigated.

"The concern of the Ganga shown by the Prime Minister is missing for the Brahmaputra. He opted not to announce any scheme concerning the Brahmaputra like the ones taken with the Ganga. He also opted not to utter a single word on the declaration of floods and erosion taking place in the State as a national problem. Let the Centre release adequate funds for the people affected by floods and erosion and declare the twin problem as a national problem."

The students' union has appealed to the people of the State not to let anybody play with their emotion and sentiment.

In Guwahati, under the aegis of the All Kamrup (M) District Students' Union a demonstration was staged at Dighalipukhuripar.
