GUWAHATI: Thousands of contractual employees working in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have threatened to go for an indefinite strike from January 27 if their demands are not fulfilled immediately.

For a city like Guwahati which produces 450 tonnes of garbage everyday such indefinite strike will definitely create hardship for residents. During the strike all kinds of services including garbage collection and cleaning of roads will remain suspended. Employees have even threatened to disrupt regular drinking water supply to residents during the strike.

"Nearly 2000 GMC employees are working on a contract basis. The city remains clean for these workers. Even during the peak of the Covid pandemic these workers continuously worked to lift garbage, cleaning of roads and other jobs associated with health hazards. But the GMC authorities are not concerned about problems faced by the contractual employees. It is a legitimate demand that jobs of these employees must be regularized," ChandanSarma, convenor of GMC Workers' Union said.

A GMC official said the civic body has already written to the State Government about the demands particularly job regularization. "We are waiting for Dispur's response," the official said.
