GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) said that the failure of the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) to supply water to the households in Guwahati led the private water suppliers to hike charges by over 100 per cent.

The unscrupulous private water suppliers in Guwahati have hiked the rates by over 100 per cent. Residents in many parts of the city stand in queue with buckets for water from GMC tankers in the scorching sun daily.

Under the circumstances, APCC secretary and president of the state unit of All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC), Gauravv Somani, has appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to stop the water supply to MLA Hostel and Ministers Colony for three days and let them buy water from private suppliers.

Somani said, "It is the only way left to make the public representatives realize the pain and suffering of the Guwahatians. It is necessary to make them feel how difficult it is to wait for their turn to take water by standing in a queue with buckets in the scorching sun. The water crisis has so worsened that ward councillors and MLAs hesitate to visit their respective localities to avoid public anger."

The disruption of GMC water supply is frequent in the areas like Fatasil, Kumarpara, Chandmari, Silpukhuri, Zoo Road etc. Residents alleged GMC officials cite technical/ mechanical snags for the disruptions and do not address prime issues such as service by the line supervisors or excess commissioning of pipelines from the reservoir.

Somani demanded immediate resumption of water supply to the households in the city and to take strict measures against private water suppliers for charging exorbitant prices from the Guwahati citizens. Somani also further asked the Government to publish rates for private water suppliers to adhere to.
