Street Vendors' Association of Assam Submits Memorandum to Kamrup (M) DC, Seeks Financial Aid

GUWAHATI: Street Vendors Association of Assam submitted a memorandum to Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu and highlighted the grim condition of the street vendors of the city.

Further the Association's secretary Chandan Goswami in the memorandum apprised the Deputy Commissioner that due to the ongoing pandemic the condition of the street vendors of the city is deteriorating.

With handful of customers in the market places and limited window to open the shops due to the COVID-19 protocol, the vendors are incurring heavy losses for which they are bound to shut the shops completely.

It is to be mentioned here that many vendors in order to survive and buy essential items are forced to sell their items at a cheaper price in order to sustain their families.

Hence for the welfare of the families of the street vendors, the Street Vendors Association of Assam in a memorandum highlighted few demands to the Commissioner.

The association demanded that each street vendor or its families should be provided with essential food items/ration for the next five months. Further each street vendor should be given a month financial aid of Rs 2000 for the next five months by means of Direct Bank Transfer (DBT).

Also every street vendor should be provided with COVID-19 protection kit- soap, mask, sanitizers, and gloves etc.; special vaccination centre for all the street vendors or should be given priority to the vendors for COVID vaccines.

The association also urged that the interest accumulated from the loans taken under PM Street Vendor's Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) and other banks should be stopped for the next five months.
