Students' Federation of India (SFI) Urges AHSEC to Come up with Clear HS Exam Guidelines

GUWAHATI: A delegation of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), Assam State Committee comprising of general secretary Nirangkush Nath, Central secretariat member Sangita Das and vice-president Pratul Barman visited Rukma Gohain Baruah, the Chairman of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and submitted a memorandum regarding the ensuing Assam Higher Secondary Final Examinations. The SFI delegation stated that AHSEC should immediately come out with a clear set of guidelines suitable for the students who are already stressed over the situation. Raising concerns over the pattern of the examination, the SFI stressed that it should be a student-centric one and should not put the students under AHSEC at risk.

"The AHSEC examination should cover all essential subjects so that no problem arises in the future and at the same time while pursuing to cover all the subjects, it should not make the students stressed. So, a proper exam mechanism has to be developed," the SFI stated.

The SFI opined that the syllabus should be drastically reduced and concentrated on the most important parts. The focus can also be on reducing the total marks and at the same time increasing the number of optional questions.

The memorandum stated that from time to time there have been some announcements which declare that examinations will be held only for three subjects. This may create a problem. For example, a student who wishes to apply for both engineering and medical will be at a loss which subjects to appear for AHSEC should immediately remove all ambiguities, the memorandum read.

The delegation also emphasized that the AHSEC exam should also conduct the examinations keeping in mind the admission time of the higher educational institutions of the whole country.

"Till now, there have been no admission notifications of various higher educational institutions as such but it should take such a decision that doesn't affect the admission into other higher educational institutions of the country. AHSEC should immediately bring the issue to the notice of the State government and urge them to discuss it with the Central government. No decision should put the students of AHSEC at a disadvantageous position," the SFI stated.

The AHSEC chairman assured that the evaluation system will be completely student-centric and in fact, the guidelines have already been prepared and shall be revealed after due approval from the Assam government. The Chairman also assured that the interest of the students will be protected so that they will not face any difficultly during school admission into various higher educational institutions of the whole country.
