GUWAHATI: The student fraternity of Assam on July 12 submitted a letter to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal severely condemning the 'unjustified long-term imprisonment of anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) activists.' As the letter stated, it is deplorable how under the pretext of several flimsy allegations one following the other, the investigating agency has managed to extend their period of incarceration for more than six months now. It is a matter of great concern to the people of Assam that a number of students, including Devangana Kalita, who led the anti-CAA protest in New Delhi, has faced the same predicament.
Therefore, the student's fraternity of Assam has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all anti-CAA activists. They also demanded the Chief Minister provision for proper medical attention to the inmates. Further, they stressed the Chief Minister to safeguard the constitution and uphold the democratic spirit of the nation.
The letter was mailed with signatures of more than 300 students from various colleges and universities including - Cotton University, Tezpur University, Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam University, IIT Guwahati, NIT Silchar, Gauhati Medical College, National School of Drama, JB College, Arya Vidyapith College, North Lakhimpur College, DKD College, Darrang College among others. It is to be noted that many students studying in Delhi University, JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) and abroad also extended solidarity to this cause.
