Assam Police today suspended Bhaskar Jyoti Nath, Sub Inspector of Bashishtha police station for "gross misconduct and dereliction of duty".

The suspension is with immediate effect and a departmental proceeding has been ordered, an order issued today by the office of Commissioner of Police said.

Charges of mishandling of money, fraud and cheating have been leveled against Sub Inspector Nath by Ramani Kalita, proprietor of a lodge in Guwahati.

According to Kalita, officer Nath entered the lodge and took away Rs 21 Lakh but informed the authorities that he had seized Rs 6.75 lakh only. Officer Nath had apparently taken some amount as a bribe from Kalita. Kalita claimed that the Rs 21 Lakh that officer Nath took away was money that Kalita got by selling some property. Kalita has apparently produced documents for the same to the Assam Police.
