GUWAHATI: The Department of Food and Civil Supplies (F&CS), Assam is contemplating on providing subsidized dal (pulses) to all cardholders under the NFSA (National Food Security Act) in the State.

Such a move came close on the heels of the department already initiating its process for providing two kg sugar free of cost to tea estate labourers of the State so as to make them giving up their habit of salt intake with tea, a practice considered bad for health, especially for women.

The department is now assessing the quantity of dal to be required per month and the monetary involvement, besides the source of procurement for the scheme if implemented in the State. The department is going to seek the views of the Finance Department on the scheme before giving it the final shape. If the Food and Civil Supplies department gets a positive note from the Finance Department on the issue, the proposed scheme is likely to become a reality from the coming financial year.
