GUWAHATI: The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Asom (TAYPA) staged a sit-in in the city on Sunday in support of various demands.

The demands of the organization include Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six indigenous communities, including the Tai Ahom community, and formation of autonomous council for the Tai Ahom community. TAYPA also demanded release of Rs 125 crore for development of the Tai Ahom community, as promised by the previous government. It also demanded an additional package of Rs 500 crore for preservation and development of the monuments of the Ahom kings and a special scholarship scheme for students of the Tai Ahom community.

Talking to The Sentinel, TAYPA spokesperson Gunakanta Gogoi said, "This sit-in was staged in some districts and subdivion headquarters at the call of TAYPA central committee president Bijoy Rajkonwar. Before every election, political parties assure that ST status would be accorded to the six communities of the State. However, after election all these assurances and promises are forgotten."

He further said, "The previous government had also assured to release Rs 125 crore for the development of the Tai Ahom community but nothing happened. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led goverment has completed 100 days. We demand the government to release this fund within this month or we will be compelled to intensify our stir."

TAYPA vice-president Ajit Deughoria, Kamrup district committee president Jayantajeet Gogoi, vice-president Debajit Gogoi and assistant secretary Partha Pratim Gogoi were present in the protest on Sunday.
