GUWAHATI: All Assam Rail Passengers' Association (AARP) welcomed Devasish Sharma for being appointed as the new Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in Assam.
In an appeal to the new commissioner, the association's General Sectary Dipankar Sarma said that as Devasish Sharma held the position of joint resident commissioner at Assam Bhawan in Mumbai and came forward as a helping hand for all the patients from Assam coming to Mumbai, hence hoped that with that amount of experience from a place like Mumbai, the new commissioner will be instrumental for the development of the city.
Further Dipankar Sarma said, "Currently the major problem in Guwahati is drinking water and secondly as the city witnesses massive footfall from people from the entire region with regards to work, rail services should be restored."
"I have also urged the new government that local trains should run till 9 PM from Guwahati to other towns in the districts of Assam," he added. Sarma appealed to the commissioner that if the local trains start to operate the city will be less populated as people will leave the city at the end of the day.
Suggesting few names of local train connectivity Dipankar Sarma urged- places like Digaru, Jagiroad, Boko, Dudhnoi, Mirza, Rangapara, Tangla, Goreswar, Barpeta Road, Patshala, Rangia among others should be connected daily until 9 PM so that the problem of lodging could be minimised.
Further the association secretary also urged the commissioner to initiate the Metro Rail Project in Guwahati and also to conduct the GMC Council Elections which have not been held from the past two years.
