GUWAHATI: To provide some relief to the common people who are already reeling under the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a meeting was held in the DC's office in the city on Tuesday between Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Kamrup (metro) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha to discuss ways to check the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities. Some crucial decisions were taken in the meeting.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, Dass announced that from next month, the price of mustard oil will decrease. He also said that steps would be taken to control the steep rise in the prices of vegetables. "Four task forces will be constituted to keep a tab on the prices of essential commodities. Also, retailers cannot increase the prices of commodities according to their whims and fancy. The difference in prices of essential items between the wholesale market and retail market cannot be more than Rs 5-Rs 6 per kg. If anyone is found violating these guidelines, we will be compelled to take strict action against them," said the minister.

He also said that he would keep updating the prices of vegetables and other essential items on his Facebook page so that consumers are aware of the prices that have been fixed by the department.
